Tour news - Micachu and The Shapes announce debut Australian tour

"I saw her in London, in June, a year ago and I was really excited about her. I thought it was that sort of 'do it yourself' approach, with all these little guitars and her attitude was really fresh… think it's really, really fun. (She) is a bit of a prankster really, isn't she?" - Bjork

Micachu and The Shapes have announced their debut Australian tour.

In 2008, a 21 year old released two limited edition 7" singles and scored an instrumental piece for the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The piece was performed at the Royal Festival Hall and played at the BBC Electric Proms to range of guests including Oasis, Goldfrapp and Burt Bacharach(!). The 21 year old was Mica Levi AKA Micachu.

Micachu with backing from The Shapes (Marc Pell - Drums, Raisa Khan - Keys & Electronics) are a treat to behold. Coming straight out of the East End of London, Micachu and The Shapes are one of the freshest acts to emerge on the indie/alternative scene in recent years.

Their rawkus sound is utterly infectious and has been pricking ears around the world. Absorbing electro-pop, wonky rhythms and edgey Brit Rock within stunning production is garnering them critical acclaim across the board.

Micachu’s debut album Jewellery, released earlier this year, has been described as "an extraordinary introduction to a unique new talent". Little wonder then that Micachu has already won a fan in experimental-pop pioneer Bjork.

This new band of 21 year olds are about to have a major impact.

“An ear-bashing of crazy-paving beats, junk-shop punk, electronic drones and deceptively mellifluous bedsit pop” - The Times

The Veils unveil November Australian dates

THE VEILS announce their long awaited Australian tour dates!
Wednesday 25 November - The Zoo, Brisbane
Friday 27 November - Oxford Arts Factory, Sydney
Saturday 28 November - The Toff In Town, Melbourne

Having released their third album SUN GANGS to worldwide critical acclaim earlier this year, talk of an Australian tour has been highly anticipated.

Australian’s have had a long distance love affair with The Veils since the release of their debut album ‘The Runaway Found’ and then with the Triple J anthem ‘Advice For Young Mothers To Be’ from the ‘Nux Vomica’ album. The last Australian tour saw the band sell out shows in Melbourne and Sydney.

The Veils are Finn Andrews, (vocals, guitar, piano, New Zealand) Sophia Burn, (bass, New Zealand) Dan Raishbrook (guitar, odd noise, England) and Raife Burchell (drums, England).

Finn’s father Barry Andrews was a founding member of the highly influential group XTC in the late 1970s, later going on to tour with the likes of Robert Fripp & Brian Eno, Iggy Pop & David Bowie.

In ‘Sun Gangs’ The Veils have brought Finn’s early influences full circle, and created a record that truly lives up to the huge promise and talent that they have always exhibited. Their live shows continue to receive rave reviews throughout the world, with the LA Times recently posting

“... as far as their set last night went, it was probably the most moving, unsettling and unexpectedly haunting thing I've seen in rock music this year... terrifying in all the best ways."

Magic Dirt announce shows as tribute to Dean Turner

Magic Dirt are set to play a run of shows as a tribute to Dean Turner.

Dean founded Magic Dirt in 1992 and played bass in the band until he passed away on August 21 this year. Dean and Magic Dirt had planned a tour in August; however Dean’s deteriorating condition led to its cancellation.

The October/November tour is the band’s loving tribute to their dear friend. It offers Magic Dirt and their fans an opportunity to give Dean the rousing and rowdy send-off he so richly deserves.

OCTOBER

Thu 15 Oct - Adelaide, The Governor Hindmarsh
Fri 16 Oct - Casterton, Casterton Town Hall
Sat 17 Oct - Warrnambool, The Loft
Sat 24 Oct - Ballarat, Karova Lounge
Wed 28 Oct - Melbourne, Corner Hotel
Fri 30 Oct - Geelong, National Hotel

NOVEMBER

Thu 5 Nov - Manly, Manly Fishos
Fri 6 Nov - Sydney, Annandale Hotel
Sat 7 Nov - Orange, Freshly Plucked Festival

Adalita, Raul and Adam from the band said when announcing the tour, "Dean loved playing live. He liked to play loud and hard and give it all he had - 110% all the way. We are so proud of Dean’s legacy and the gifts he has left with us: his perseverance, passion and commitment to the music, his endearing boyish fun, his invigorating and uplifting attitude on that long hard road and his pure punk rock spirit on stage, behind the scenes and around us at all times."

Matt Sonic from Sons of the Sun and Matt Sonic & the High Times will play bass with the band on the tour.
Matt is a close friend of the band, (Dean produced the first Sons of the Sun record) and previously deputised when Dean was unable to play shows.

Ned Collette + Wirewalker reveal details of album #3, tour dates and new mp3.

The creation of an album is a time of alchemy, as the sounds in an artist’s head take on tangible form. It’s a time of enchantment and good fortune, when thoughts become deeds, which in turn become captured moments and future memories.

However, from another perspective, the creation is only the start of the process. The music takes on a life of its own, beating its own path and forging its own identity out in the world. The musician’s life becomes defined and determined by the course the music takes.

This has been the case for Ned Collette. In the two years since the release of his sophomore work, Future Suture, his music has led him around the globe, in and out of late night bars and dark venues, sometimes accompanied by his extraordinary band, sometimes alone – always with his solitary vision.

The new creation is Over The Stones, Under The Stars, an album purposefully stripped of theorchestration that marked previous releases, conveying more of the fiery live experience of this unique band, forged from the last two years of performing around the world. Ned also adds piano, organ and mellotron to his usual axe slinging.

The first single taken from the album is Come Clean

Ned Collette + Wirewalker - Come Clean [mp3]

In November the caravan rolls on, as Ned Collette + Wirewalker tour Australia.
All shows will be with Teeth &
Tongue except * with Laura Jean:

Fri 13 Nov - Adelaide, Metro*

Fri 20 Nov - Bateman's Bay, North St Bar

Sat 21 Nov - Sydney, Raval (tickets here)

Fri 27 Nov - Melbourne, Northcote Social Club

Sat 28 Nov - Hobart, Alley Cat

Early in 2010 Ned Collette + Wirewalker will relocate long-term to Europe, with a continental tour organized by their European agent commencing in May.

Over The Stones, Under The Stars is released October 23rd on Dot Dash.

Sydney: Ned Collette & Wirewalker in your town tomorrow night!

Hello friends,

We're about to go where none of us has ever gone before - on a Tiger Airways flight. To Sydney. We've been there before although it does seem a while since we flew - usually it's the world's worst coffee and pies in Holbrook for us, then turn left at the Hopetoun.....

But this weekend - tomorrow night to be exact we're playing our first Sydney show since last September, and we're doing it at The Factory Theatre, which by all accounts is enourmous, so if you're a Sydneysider on this list or know any, please come on down, so to speak.

Also on the bill are the excellent Wifey, and in the middle spot Sui Zhen. Doors are at 7.30 for an 8.30 start and we'll be on just after 10pm. We'll be previewing a whole bunch of stuff off the new album as well as playing some ear-poppingly re-arranged versions of old news.
You can buy tickets now online or by calling the box office on (02) 9550 3666. They are $15+bf. Or $18 on the door, unless it sells out, which it wont.

Ned Collette & Wirewalker in Sydney Fri July 17

NED COLLETTE & WIREWALKER
FRIDAY JULY 17
FACTORY THEATRE
w. Sui Zhen & Wifey

The last year has seen Melbourne's Ned Collette and his newly christened Wirewalker forging a devoted underground following around the globe. Since last playing in Sydney the band have toured Europe twice while Collette based himself in Glasgow to write album number three; played the exceedingly exclusive Camp A Low Hum festival in NZ; supported Augie March on various Australian shows, and played both the Summer and Castle Tones festivals on the Mistletone calendar. They have just returned from mixing the new album in New York, and now they play an increasingly rare Sydney performance at The Factory Theatre on July 17. New songs will be unveiled in what is ostensibly an album preview show, but fans can expect a smattering of the old as well - reworked into the the trio format, which veers from minute, sparse evocations of Collette's lyrics to wild free squalls of instrumental abandon. Very special guests on the night will be Sydney's own Sui Zhen and Wifey.

one of the best local debuts in recent timesThe Age ****

a timeless world” Sydney Morning Herald ****

Heavy Profession is a rock record proper, romantic and drunk on poetic absolutes like all good bleeding heart music should be.” Threethousand

A reminder to all Melbournians that St Helens will launch their brilliant debut album Heavy Profession this Saturday the 30th of May at Northcote Social Club supported by Panel Of Judges, Circle Pit and DJ Ann Ominous.

Since the release of the album these guys have been pretty hard to miss. Heavy Profession has received glowing reviews, was RRR album of the week and last week the band graced the cover of Inpress.

Friendly Fires announce debut Australian tour

“Friendly Fires are on an unstoppably stratospheric trajectory” NME

“Sophisticated and fun, Friendly Fires is a fine example of dance music with a brain in it’s head” Drum Sydney

“One of the most exciting bands out of the UK at the moment” Music Network

“Friendly Fires show an amplified, ambitious, and inventive attention to detail that helps steer them away from sounding like just another polished party band.” Pitchfork Media

“This is the definitive nu-rave album” Inpress

This UK trio have been labelled everything from dance-punk, to the new nu-wave, electro-pop, melodic song, and disco dance. Call them what you will, we can safely say that U.K’s Friendly Fires are undeniably one of the most exciting bands of 2009. We are pleased to announce their debut Australian tour surrounding an appearance at Splendour In The Grass this July.

Ed Macfarlane, Jack Savidge, and Edd Gibson have been playing together since they met at age 14, although they have come a long way since the days of their first band, post-hardcore outfit First Day Back. Nowadays they consider the artists on the German techno label Kompakt the greatest influence on their sound, and have been called leaders of the “intelligent disco revolution”.

The band released their debut self-titled record this year through XL Recordings in the UK – also home to Peaches, The White Stripes, M.I.A., Sigur Ros, and Vampire Weekend, just to name a few. Their track ‘Paris’ received massive radio airplay and has been named Single Of the Week by The Guardian and NME, not to mention being amongst Pitchfork’s Best 100 Tracks Of 2008. Locally, the record was triple j’s Feature Album of the Week, and several tracks from the record have been added to high rotation nationally on both commercial and community radio.

“The surprise is their sophistication; like Klaxons, they're just fluorescent enough to keep club kids interested, but their real commitment is to sparkling, modern pop” The Guardian (UK), 4 stars.

So after playing sell-out shows throughout Europe and the UK and opening for acts such as Interpol and Blur, we are very excited to finally have Friendly Fires heading our way in 2009. They will be appearing at the Splendour In The Grass in Byron Bay, along with as club shows in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne.
All show details below.

VulgarGrad at The Tote tomorrow night

Vulgargrad & Clinkerfield
…the russian criminals attempt to smash the drunken pirate convicts, and vice versa…

Saturday 16 May, The Tote Hotel
Corner Johnston & Wellington St, Collingwood VIC, Ph 03 9419 5320
Doors 8:30 pm, $15 entry.

Finally, after more than a year of evil-eyeing each other from across the way, with many snide remarks and rude retorts tossed provocatively at each other from across the bar-room, the Russian criminals and the drunken pirate convicts assemble for a showdown on the same stage. Vulgargrad was heard to say, “That’s not a pirate ship – it’s a bathtub, you half-baked bunch of babies!” to which Clinkerfield shot back, “You’re nothing but an overstocked shop-window full of striped candies”. The knives are out and they’re smashing bottles over each others heads at the Tote, Saturday 16th May, when Clinkerfield and Vulgargrad rush headlong at each other, with support from Pete & The Tar Gang.

This be Vulgargrad’s first show back after packing the Old Bar to the roof on Anzac Day when they danced with Clinkerfield’s alter-ego The Miserable Little Bastards, and last before touring nationally to pervert minds across the country with their new CD King of Crooks. It’s also Clinkerfield’s final local show for two months before their riotous ringleader Jimmy Stewart vanishes to the USA for a solo musical misadventure. So it’s just gonna be extra special and crazee emotionally charged with the possibility for brawling and blood.

Lee Memorial launch album in Melbourne this Saturday

'just as rewarding musically as lyrically, and every note seems to be hung exactly in the right place' - Inpress

'a compelling record' - Beat

'Smith is clearly a man with the Midas Touch... one of the best local releases of 2009' **** TimeOff

'a touching journey of extreme social, political and daily relevance, delivered through beautifully realised metaphor and honest personal recount... a striking debut' - The Vine

Lee Memorial are launching their album this Saturday in Melbourne at the Northcote Social Club, supported by Witch Hats and Matt Bailey (ex Paradise Motel).

Lee Memorial started out as a ramshackle solo project of Karl Smith from Sodastream, but after enlisting the help of a brigade of unlikely cohorts from Ninety-Nine, The Nation Blue and Gaslight Radio, the project soon took on a life of its own. They tumbled in and out of luck through 2008; recording and playing sporadic live shows, all-the-while battling illness, relationship breakdowns, death and uncooperative computers. But now they’ve dusted themselves off, combed their hair and are now ready to share their debut album – the lives of lee memorial – with anyone who’ll listen.

Ratatat announce extra Melbourne show

So RATATAT arrived in the country today and are excited about how much everyone down this way is responding to the tour... so much so that due to the demand for tickets they have reconfigured the tour plans to include a SECOND MELBOURNE show on MON 11 MAY.

This is on top of Perth moving to the larger venue CAPITOL after tickets sold out at our first visit there.

Wellington has also sold out... and both Sydney and Auckland are moving that way very fast as well...

We have also added in Vietnam and Malaysian shows.

After three albums - 2004's RATATAT (with Seventeen Years), 2006's CLASSICS (with Wildcat), and 2008's more recent LP3 (with Mirando and Shempi)... and completion nearing on LP4.

From supporting Daft Punk at the LA Sports Arena in June 2007, to tours with Daft Punk, Mouse on Mars, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, CSS, The Faint, Super Furry Animals, Björk, Clinic, Panther and The Killers... and Mogwai in Japan... along with their own outstanding headline tours including the 2005 Australia/NZ debut tour, and the Essential Festival and dates with Regurgitator in 2007.

“the coolest unconventional musicians of 2008 – there’s no doubt this is genius at work” (Rip It Up)

“The hallmark of Ratatat’s genius is their willingness to process the absolute hell out of their guitar sounds, warping them almost beyond recognition to create a blueprint for the progression of music for decades to come” (Time Out Sydney)

Evan and Mike navigate their unique sonic hover crafting a free flowing chromatic wave of guitars, keyboards, beats, smoke and mirrors back to add another overwhelming layer of atmosphere with TOUR3.

This tour will also include for the first time shows in China, Hong Kong, Vietnam... and more if the wind allows it.

VulgarGrad launch King Of Crooks in Hobart and Melbourne this weekend

VulgarGrad, that mysterious band of Russian criminals, launch their long-awaited new CD, ‘King of Crooks.’

You might have sampled their fantastic live performance from their past appearance on Spicks and Specks:

Fronted by Polish-born gravelly-voiced strongman and rough diamond of stage and screen, Jacek Koman, VulgarGrad are the only band in the country that play music by, for, and about Russian thieves: raucous drinking songs, melancholy waltzes, manic oompah and hot Soviet-era swing. Be prepared for a night of gun-slinging, vodka-swilling, foul-mouthed disorder, and watch out for the biggest, most triangular instrument around, the kontrabas balalaika. Wear a stripy top, learn to swear in Russian, and you will dance or the trumpeter will shoot you.

Fri 3 Apr – Tasmania, The Brisbane Hotel

Deerhunter announce their first tour of Australia

Deerhunter have just announced their first tour of Australia!:

"A massive, psych‐heavy, art‐damaged four piece, and one of the most inspired new bands we’ve heard in quite a while... not to mention their absolutely fucking insane live shows." – Pitchfork

Deerhunter began in 2001 with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with the klang and propulsion of garage rock. Since then, the band has weathered chaotic line‐up changes, the death of a member and much discouragement, to emerge in the past two years as an unchallenged tenant of pop avantgarde, capturing listens the world wide.

The band creates songs in a psychophysical multitrack stream of‐consciousness rush but their most compelling asset is a penchant for unpredictability. No two performances are the same; rather the group's cerebral fingerprint shines through constantly morphing presentations.

Their live performances almost always leave audiences indoctrinated, having been referred to by Karen O of the yeah yeah yeah’s in NME as bordering on “a religious experience.”

Deerhunter have just completed a European tour where they played shows with Liars as well as festival slots at Pitchfork vs All Tomorrow’s Parties and Primavera.

Jeffrey Lewis - headline show dates and lectures

My god, Jeffrey Lewis is going to have to maintain a steady supply of Beroccas while he's on the country to keep up with the gigantic schedule of shows and lectures he has in store, sometimes with 3 appearances in the one day. Check it out:

Cult anti-folk troubadour and comic book artist JEFFREY LEWIS is coming all the way from New York to support DARREN HANLON on his national tour, play a few of his own shows and present a very special series of lectures on the comic (and now feature film) Watchmen.

Since his emergence at the forefront of the anti-folk movement in the late 90's, Jeff has performed and collaborated with the likes of Kimya Dawson, the Moldy Peaches and Steve Malkmus, winning fans the world over for wry, literate and often downright hilarious songs.

Performing solo on Darren's tour and at his own shows, Jeff will bring his unique mixture of acoustic punk songs to enchant you. Look out for impromptu comic book readings and hand drawn flip pad presentations within the set along with the odd poem or two.

Praise for the Watchmen lecture series:
'[The movie] does not even compare to the experience I had at [Jeff's] lecture... Warner Bros should have given Jeff a hundred million dollars instead. Where the movie didn't add a single thing to my experience of Watchmen, the lecture blew my mind and captured my attention and imagination." [Jason Levian of Floating World Comics, Oregon]

Ned Collette and Wirewalker

with
MICK TURNER (Dirty Three/Tren Brothers)
RAND & HOLLAND (Syd)
CUBA IS JAPAN

FRIDAY MARCH 27, THE THORNBURY THEATRE, Melbourne
859 High St Thornbury, Vic
www.thethornburytheatre.com
presented by Triple R

Ned Collette and the newly christened Wirewalker return to Melbourne to play a very special one off show at the magnificent Thornbury Theatre on Friday March 27th. The show marks their return from two tours of Europe and a sojourn in New Zealand, and will encompass extensively road tested new material along with a smattering of the old. The ravages of exile have done nothing to weary the strength of the band - in fact the opposite - while Collette's lyrical fancy now turns to themes of the divine, the oppressed, and the eternal migration of the collective human soul. A new track, "Another Goddamned Amusement Park" - a musing on the probability that much of the internet is turning into the same dreary stultifier of thought that television has long become - is currently being featured exclusively by Triple R in anticipation of the show. Work on album number three continues, so this will be their only appearance until its completion mid year. Joining them on the night will be Mick Turner - the inimitable guitarist of the Dirty Three, dark and eloquent Sydney folk favourites Rand & Holland in an all too rare trip south, and conceptual newcomers Cuba Is Japan.

Presale tickets are now avalable now from www.thethornburytheatre.com

Doors 7pm, music starts at 7.50pm. Main act onstage 10.30pm.

Lee Memorial bring Berlin to The Tote this Fri 13th

Lee Memorial started out as a ramshackle solo project of Karl Smith from Sodastream, but after enlisting the help of a brigade of unlikely cohorts from Ninety-Nine, The Nation Blue and Gaslight Radio, the project began to take on a life all its own.

Lee Memorial tumbled in and out of luck through 2008. They played sporadic live shows and chipped away at their album, all-the-while battling illness, relationship breakdowns, death, unhappy computers and the devastating effects of cheap shampoo. So now, after having shaken off last year’s blues, Lee Memorial return to the Tote on March 13 with their new record – the lives of lee memorial - tucked under their spindly little arms and a whole lot of nervous energy to burn.

Friday the 13th seemed a fitting date for this unlucky and accident-prone bunch to launch their new single, Belin. To celebrate making it this far, they’re giving away a free single to the first forty haircuts through the door; the rest get to buy themselves a beer.

Supports on the night will be Dot Dash labelmates St Helens, and Lakes.

Berlin single launch at The Tote, Melbourne
Lee Memorial 11.30- 12.30am
St Helens 10.15- 11pm
Lakes 9- 9.45pm

Jeffrey Lewis rolls out new single and tour dates

Part folkie, part indie-rocker, part comic book artist, how does indigenous New Yorker Jeffrey Lewis do it?

After a 2008 spent almost entirely on the road, including support tours with some of the most respected artists around (Jarvis Cocker, The Cribs, Stephen Malkmus and The Mountain Goats, to name but a few!), as well as with artistic and literary projects all over the map (an illustrated rhyming history of Communism, lectures on the comic book Watchmen, blogs for the New York Times, even an illustrated biography of Barack Obama), Jeffrey somehow managed to find the time to record his best album yet.

'Em Are I by Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard is Jeff's fifth full-length for Rough Trade, and represents the first time that all of the greatest elements of his previous recordings have formed a fully cohesive and amazing whole.

With lyrics straight from the heart and melancholic finger-picked guitar, Roll Bus Roll is the first single from the album.

Jaguar Love get nailed

Nine Inch Nails have handpicked Jaguar Love to be their sole support act for their Melbourne and Sydney shows next week. Both bands will be playing at the Soundwave Festivals with Jaguar Love playing also playing sideshows in Melbourne and Sydney with Minus The Bear.

Originally forming in Seattle, Jaguar Love (Cody Votolato and Johnny Whitney of Blood Brothers and Jay Clark from Pretty Girls Make Graves) soon up and moved to Portland where the ferociously creative and once-noisy musicians added incredibly catchy melody to their songwriting. The result is their debut album Take Me To The Sea, a collection of 10 songs that are as surreal as they are anthemic. Oh, and they’re a little bit glam too.

Snowman: The Balcony of Our Uprising

Currently calling snowy London home, Perth's Snowman have had an article published in the UK's main Australian newspaper, Australian Times:
Dear Public,

Music is a virus. It can only be contained for so long before it begins to evolve and to breed. The golden strain has now developed. There is no cure. It is airborne, floating in the ether. To attempt to capture it would be like chasing ghosts.

While the global economy crumbles before our very eyes and the fall of the American empire seems imminent, there is a sense that something artistically significant is afoot. As the recession spirals into the next great depression and the major record labels begin to drop like flies, the perfect breeding ground for music is born. From our darkest hours come our finest moments.
You can read the rest of the article here.

In other Snowman news, they'll be playing their first show in Paris on March 4th at La Mecanique Ondulatoire.
They'll also be supporting America's Crystal Antlers at White Heat in London on March 10th.

Stereolab tour starts this weekend

Seminal UK band Stereolab head to our shores for the first time in six years, starting with an appearance at Brisbane's Laneway Festival on Saturday.

Shooting at Unarmed Men's last ever show

Shooting at Unarmed Men will perform for the last time ever this Saturday 31st at Melbourne's Tote.

SAUM first graced Australian stages back in 2006 when frontman, Jon Chapple (ex Mclusky), relocated from Wales to Melbourne, recruiting a new lineup.

Three albums and countless shows later, SAUM are calling it a day with what's sure to be a memorable send off. Available at the show will be unmastered copies of their fourth LP titled With the Youthful Energy of a Zealot. Joining them will be World's End Press, A Friend Of Mine, Poor People and Wicked City. Tickets are only $8 and there'll be a free BBQ. And if all this wasn't enough to persuade you, there's also going to be a pie eating contest. Pie!

And to quote the band, "
If you don't attend this moment in history you're a wanker, geographically challenged, or simply someone with something better to do. (But probably the former)"

St Helens - new single and tour dates

With their debut album set for release later this year, Melbourne’s St Helens give us a taste of what’s to come with new single How To Choose Your Guru Part 2. A testament to Jarrod Quarrell’s songwriting skills, the jagged guitars on ‘How To Choose…’ intertwine with a fervent cowbell beat to create an intensely pulsing track.

In the lead up to the release of their album, St Helens will be playing shows along the East Coast starting with a show at Melbourne’s East Brunswick Club on February 6th supporting Devastations on their only Australian show. St Helens’ music is as fervent on the stage as in the studio with word of mouth about their live performances landing St Helens the opening slot for Blonde Redhead after only 4 gigs back in 2007.

Snowman honoured by Pitchfork

Snowman have capped off a busy year by getting an honourable mention for their sophomore album The Horse, The Rat and The Swan in Pitchfork's Albums of the Year list. Here's a bit of what they said about the album:
"The record is a proud enigma, technologically advanced and primal, referential but utterly unique, a terrifying vision of our Stone Age future."
Snowman released the album in May and following a national tour relocated to London. If you've been wondering what they've been up to, here's a message from Joe:
To those of you who give a damn,

We are sorry for the long silence, our communication methods were disabled. We have been busy building new lives in London. Slowly the empire is growing. We have found a home of some description, in Walthamstow, E17 (where the group East 17 once hailed from, though I doubt we will be channeling any of their magic). Our home is above an Italian cafe on a high street. On our doorstep there are markets. Most mornings I am woken by the sound of a cockney shouting "two for a pound" or "money back guarantee". I fall asleep at night to the sound of a domestic disturbance or a stabbing. There are seven of us living in the flat. We have one toilet. I am sleeping under a stairwell...in a passage way. Today I am locked inside the house as I have not been allocated a key yet. In time these minor issues will be resolved.

We all appear to have jobs now. None of which are worth mentioning other than Ross'. He is a garbage man.

We have played a few shows here in the UK. We played Leeds, Bristol and London with fellow Australian noisemakers PIVOT. They are fine gentlemen and a wonderful band. Dear chum and label sibling Ned Collette played a show with us the other night too.

We are working on some new things. Bits and pieces. Something will rear it's ugly head at some stage.

We hope you are safe and warm.

Love always,

The SNOWMAN Empire
Snowman will be playing at Madame JoJo's (White Heat) in Soho on January 6th with HTRK.

Dead Meadow sideshows announced

Psych rockers Dead Meadow have announced three sideshows alongside their performances at the inaugural Australian ATP Festival. Joining them for these indie extravaganzas will be UK electro duo Fuck Buttons and Japan's Afrirampo.

Combining a love of 70s rock and boogie with a strong 60s psychedelic and eastern influence has earned US band Dead Meadow a cult following the world over, more so with their latest album Old Growth and which is arguably their best and most accessible to date. On the album, chocolate thick overdubs of tamburas, Mellotrons and Hammonds flesh out barnyard stomp skeletons. Dead Meadow are renowned for their fierce live shows and will force you to go forward with them, to climb that mountain, leave your earthly problems behind and most importantly grow up.

Devastations return to Melbourne for one show only

Taking a brief hiatus from their hiatus, Melbourne's Devastations will be returning to their home town to perform at the East Brunswick Club on Friday 6th February. This will be their one and only Australian show in the foreseeable future so you'll be a fool to miss it.

Following the release of their acclaimed third album Yes, U in late 2007, Devastations went on a massive five month tour of Europe before heading back to Australia to play a sprinkling of shows earlier this year, followed by a tour of Europe and the UK supporting Blonde Redhead. Early in 2008 the band played a number of festivals including the esteemed Primavera Festival.

The band have also collaborated with Blonde Redhead for the Aaron and Bryce Dessner (The National) curated AIDs benefit compilation Dark Was the Night, which will be released in February through 4AD. The collaboration sees Blonde Redhead's Kazu adding vocals to the instrumental track Misericordia from Yes, U. Conrad has also provided a song for Alan Vega's (Suicide) 70th Birthday EP series which also sees contributions from Grinderman, Primal Scream, Sunn O))) and Peaches.

Wolf & Cub - Seven Sevens

So many things happen in 49 days…

Wolf & Cub return with Seven Sevens - the new single from their forthcoming album, which will be released in February 2009.

Recorded with Bumblebeez genius Chris Colonna in his hometown of Braidwood, the song is awash with the psyched out vocals and intergalactic guitar of front man Joel Byrne, combined with the driving bass playing of Thomas Mayhew and the highly combustible percussion courtesy of Joel Carey and newcomer Marvin Hammond.

Taking the raw elements of the early demos and coupling them with the studio wizardry of Colonna, Wolf & Cub have created a memorable cocktail, one part lysergic… one part darkly danceable.

Between now and the release of the new album Wolf & Cub will be performing at the Falls and Southbound Festivals and will support New Yorkers TV On The Radio on their Australian side shows in January.

Future Of The Left cancel tour

Welsh trio Future Of The Left have reluctantly pulled out of all their upcoming tour dates, including shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, as well as dates in the UK and China.

The band released a statement attributing the decision to building pressure to release their second album in the first half of 2009.
“We have been unable to write the second record and we are increasingly aware of the need to do so. We want to get it out before summer so we can spend next year playing it to people.

"It is against everything the band stands for to pull shows, or anything that we have already committed to doing, and we apologise to everyone who had bought a ticket or was going to come along.

"We will be back as soon as we can next year and we promise to make it worth the wait."

Future Of The Left were scheduled to play in Australia in early January.

Prior to the release of their official second album, the band will be releasing new live album Last Night I Saved Her From Vampires in the coming months.

Jane Badler brings her devilish show to Sydney and Melbourne

Sat 15 Nov – Sydney, Vanguard
Thu 11 Dec – Melbourne, Spiegeltent

This weekend, Sat November 15th ‘The Devil has my Double’ an album by Hollywood glamour icon Jane Badler has its Sydney launch at the Vanguard. The album is a compulsive mix of fame, sex and solitude set to a soundtrack of sweeping cold soul and synthetics. ‘The Devil has my Double’ a tale of too much for too long. How a charmed life has its price and eventually it must be paid.

The album lyrically and musically reflects Jane’s remarkable life and career from her initial public notoriety as Miss New Hampshire, competing in the Miss America pageant, to her long and varied career in Hollywood B films and television.

Jane appeared weekly on American television from 1976 to 1989 including roles in the classic daytime soap One life to live, Fantasy Island, the kidnapping seductress of Alex Baldwin’s baby in The Doctors and the on-air adversary of Kim Novak in Falcon’s Crest. Jane is best remembered for her portrayal of sexually charged villain Diana in the cult classic V, (Jane’s was voted one of Science Fictions 25 greatest legends in American TV Guide, August 2004).

Jane Badler began her professional singing career singing at the Playboy Club in Manhattan in the mid seventies, and finally after years of performing releases an album of originals informed by the twists and turns of her curious story.

Praise for the album

“An American Marianne Faithfull…a lurid snapshot of Hollyweird (sic) that is “The Devil has My Double” Australian Vogue Sep 08
“The female psyche hasn't been put on display this artfully since EURYTHMICS’ 1987 album 'SAVAGE'. Rockwired July 08
“21st Century torch songs, a chanteuse surveying her tattered past” Sydney Morning Herald July 4th 08
“The Devil Has My Double is a sultry love story of a woman
scorned, both understated and intense at the same time.” SX News July 08

“This assured recording will appeal to chic sorts who live a deadly lifestyle, lingering in cheap motels rooms, negligee torn, lipstick smeared.”
Melbourne Community Voice July 08

Next month will see Jane Badler and Sir perform at the Spiegeltent in Melbourne. Stay tuned for more details.

Gary Numan touring Australia in March

Numanoids, the wait is finally over. The godfather of electro, Gary Numan, will be bringing his full UK light show and electrifying live performance to Australia playing songs from his entire career from Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon through to Pure and Jagged.

It will be only his second ever tour of Australia, his first being way back in May 1980, but as anyone who has seen him live recently will attest, it may be 30 years on but he's got more energy than bands half his age and he is still at his elemental and exploratory best, revitalised and recaptured, and importantly, rewriting his reborn future.

Earlier this year Numan celebrated his 30th year in music, marking the occassion by releasing a re-issue of pioneering electronic album Replicas, which features for the first time a complete earlier version of the Replicas album recorded in late 1978 and January 1979, along with the original B-sides and further out-takes, adding up to 27 tracks across the two CDs.

His pioneering sounds are still felt today inspiring Prodigy, Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins, as well as being sampled by artists as diverse as Basement Jaxx, Armand Van Helden and even the Sugababes. Fans of The Mighty Boosh may even have seen a few of his cameo appearances on the show.

This - coupled with the unique vocals of singer Matt Blackman (ex-Purplene) - carries this brave and beautiful collection of tunes out of the traditional rock/pop arena and into an untouched, often desolate yet distinctly Australian sonic territory.

Cloud Control mix it with Sulo

Blue Mountains indie-folk 4 piece Cloud Control have joined forces with Sulo aka Richard Tamplenizza (producer of ARIA nominated hip hop collective The Herd and member of Elefant Traks label/collective) to do a lush summer remix on the stand out Cloud Control EP track Into The Line.

The remix version transforms the already psychedelic dreamy track into a laid back, spacious, beat driven interpretation - using Alister Wright and Heidi Leffner's beautiful vocal harmonies with jazz piano and dub undertones to create the warmth of summer with a kailedoscope of pina coladas.

Into The Line (Sulo Remix) [mp3]

The remix will feature as part of the Death Cloud iTunes package available from November 3rd.

It's been a busy few weeks for Cloud Control. Today they have been announced as finalsts for the Qantas Spirit Of Youth Awards alongside My Disco and Catcall. The winners of the 07 and 06 awards were Dot Dash's Young & Restless and Wolf & Cub, both going on extensive national tours after their wins.

Cloud Control are currently on their Death Cloud Tour, playing in Melbourne this Saturday. They will also be supporting Little Red on their Uni Tour in Wollongong and Sydney next week.

Jay Reatard and Stereolab hit the streets

Jay Reatard and Stereolab have both been announced to play next year's Laneway Festivals.

It's been six long years since Stereolab last graced Australia's shores and four since their last album release, Margerine Eclipse. Stereolab recently released their 11th studio album in an illustrious career, Chemical Chords. According to Tim Gane the album is a collection of “purposefully short, dense, fast pop songs”. It is classic Stereolab; like all their best work it is the perfect melding of an implausibly cool past and a shamelessly exotic future.

Last week saw the release of Jay Reatard's new album Matador Singles '08. The release compiles the 12 punk pop gems that Jay has released over the past few months on limited 7" through Matador. With Jay already working on his debut album proper for Matador, we can all look forward to hopefully hearing this new material live.

New video from Cloud Control

Cloud Control have just released a new single, Death Cloud. It's the first single from their debut LP, due out in Autumn 2009, and you can watch the clip below.

Listening to the band’s beautiful alt-folk strumming, you can hear Cloud Control capturing a snapshot of an era when pitch-perfect harmonies were sung over folk hooks and sunny melodies; when pop was pure and just made you smile.

The band have just finished touring the East Coast supporting Supergrass and will kick off their Death Cloud tour this Friday. Tonight they'll be supporting Holly Throsby in Canberra. Available at the shows will be the split 7" featuring the new single, as well as the track "All Of A Sudden" by Telekinesis! More info about the release here.

Emiliana Torrini Australian tour announced

At long last Emiliana Torrini is back with a new album, Me and Armini, and will be playing some long awaited shows in Australia this November.

“A perfect cocktail of delicate acoustic ballads, downbeat pop & electro”
J Mag

“With Me and Armini she lays all of her cards on the table & it could well be her defining moment”
The Brag

Iceland’s Emiliana Torrini made a very strong connection with Australian audiences via her Fisherman’s Woman album (which featured the hit single Sunny Road) and subsequent national tour in 2005.

Renowned for her soothing, ethereal vocals, as evidenced via her performance of Gollum’s Song on the Lord of The Ring’s soundtrack, and her sublime, intimate songwriting (she also co-wrote the Kylie Minogue hit Slow), Me and Armini is Emiliana Torrini’s most captivating and ambitious album to date and is a record that is destined to be one of the albums of 2008.

As anyone who saw the 2005 tour will know, she is nothing short of a sensation in the live setting. Exuberant and confident, Emiliana creates a wonderful, organic bond with the audience. And just to make things extra special, these upcoming shows will be performed in full band mode.
