Peter Gabriel and and Hot Chip cover Vampire Weekend
"And it feels so unnatural. Peter Gabriel, too."
With a chorus line like that, how could Peter Gabriel not do a cover of Vampire Weekend track Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa? And with electric keyboard help courtesy of Hot Chip, this is the result:
"It feels so unnatural. Peter Gabriel, too. And it feels so unnatural to sing your own name."
Following on from his ridiculously catchy debut album Matinee, released late last year, UK's pop darling Jack Peñate returns with his new single Tonight's Today.
The single just debuted on BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe show as his 'Hottest Record In The World'. Hear why for yourself:
Blue Mountains psychedelic rockers, Belles Will Ring will be touring through out February and March 2009. Their mission: promote the band's new mini album Broader Than Broadway.
Following on from their critically acclaimed debut record Mood Patterns (2007), the mini album has been praised as an accomplished release, once again recorded and produced by the band in a lounge room in the Blue Mountains.
Following an extensive touring schedule through out most of 2007 and early 2008, Belles Will Ring are seasoned players and offer an exciting live show of jangly guitar jams, beautiful harmonies and one of the best rhythm sections you'll ever see.
Joining them for the tour is Sydney based garage-soul band Philadelphia Grand Jury and Brisbane based indie-folk-pop act Little Scout. Both bands were announced Triple J Next Crop Artists in November and will be promoting new singles on the tour.
There is also a free tour sampler featuring 3 tracks from each band available to download - HERE! Included in the sampler is the Broader Than Broadway track Renegades .
"Belles Will Ring have crafted one of the best psychedelic pop albums, mini-albums — fuck it — releases of the year." Mess and Noise
"The whole CD resonates with crystalline harmonies and luscious sonics." Rave Magazine

It may not being feeling very Summery where you are now, but Little Joy are here to fix all that with their new single No One's Better Sake [mp3]
The video for the new single sees the band timewarp back to the 60s and includes a cameo by a maraca shaking Devendra Banhart:
Little Joy are Fabrizio Moretti from The Strokes, Binki Shapiro and Brazilian musician Rodrigo Amarante. Named after a nearby cocktail lounge, Little Joy's self-titled debut is a little bit Strokes and a little bit Tropicaia... the perfect soundtrack to a lazy Summer.
As promised, we have a brand new track from A.C. Newman's upcoming album Get Guilty. Following on from the first mp3 There Are Maybe Ten Or Twelve we bring you Submarines of Stockholm (edited version) [mp3]
Get Guilty is the follow up to Newman's 2004 solo debut The Slow Wonder which Pitchfork described as "soulful sing-alongs with grit, pop nuggets that hold up to hours of repeat play, and ultimately, the sound of a great songwriter hitting his stride."
Get Guilty is another showcase of Newman's fascinating blend of catchiness and impenetrability. The album is due out in January.
Tanlines are duo Eric Emm (from production duo Brothers) and Jesse Cohen (Professor Murder). The Brooklyn based duo came to some prominence and notoriety earlier this year with a playful, synth-led remix of Telepathe’s ‘Chromes On It’ [mp3]
Their unique approach to having their music heard includes using YouTube (which they describe as the best record label ever), to post tracks accompanied by self-made videos on their own channel as soon as the songs are done, creating a bizarre, almost psychedelic visual experience of Tanlines music.
They will release their debut 12", New Flowers, in January through Young Turks (Holy Fuck, El Guincho). The Balearic house-meets-Larry Levan’s NYC disco groove track was created when artist Marisa Olson asked them to contribute to the launch of her art book, Poems I Wrote While Listening to the Doors, 1992-1994 (Before I Found The Internet). They took one word from the suggested poem - “flowers”, and created this euphoric (mostly) instrumental track. The video features visual by Marisa.

The Airing of Grievances is the debut album from New Jersey's Titus Andronicus, who named themselves after the Shakespearean tragedy.
The album was originally released in May of this year, getting a stellar 8.5 review on Pitchfork. XL will be realising a newly mastered version of the album in early 2009.
What does Titus Andronicus want people to walk away with after experiencing The Airing of Grievances? “Just that we’re humans, like them,” Stickles says. “That we’re every bit as imperfect and flawed and weak as they are. People always used to talk about Led Zeppelin, and how they were, like, gods onstage. I want people to look at us and see humans onstage, reveling in their humanity. We’re just regular guys from New Jersey, with the same wants and needs and desires and anxieties and disappointments that everybody else has.”
Having won triple j's unearthed competition, F!SR,F! recently wowed Sydney's Homebake crowd with their unique angular pop. They've also been busy completing their new album, the first single from which is War Coward. The digital EP also features a remix by electro-mashup outfit and fellow Adelaide Laneway guests The Waterslides. War Coward (Waterslides Remix) [mp3]
Melbourne audiences should be no strangers to the hypnotic and enthralling sounds produced by Jarrod Zlatic and Nisa Venerosa of Fabulous Diamonds. The duo will play the Melbourne Laneway having completed a 30 date tour with Times New Viking and Psychedelic Horseshit earlier in the year. During that time they also released their debut album7 songsin the US through Siltbreeze, receiving a 7.4 rating from Pitchfork who described their songs as "smooth enough to run your fingers over". "Being well-liked is like a drug. After a while you just need to be well-liked to feel normal. So I'm just chasin' the dragon."
Already working on the follow up his upcoming album Get Guilty, A.C. Newman chatted to Pitchfork about Get Guilty, The New Pornographers and being included in Stabucks' Valentine's Day compilation.

Devastations return to Melbourne for one show only
Taking a brief hiatus from their hiatus, Melbourne's Devastations will be returning to their home town to perform at the East Brunswick Club on Friday 6th February. This will be their one and only Australian show in the foreseeable future so you'll be a fool to miss it.
Following the release of their acclaimed third album Yes, U in late 2007, Devastations went on a massive five month tour of Europe before heading back to Australia to play a sprinkling of shows earlier this year, followed by a tour of Europe and the UK supporting Blonde Redhead. Early in 2008 the band played a number of festivals including the esteemed Primavera Festival.
The band have also collaborated with Blonde Redhead for the Aaron and Bryce Dessner (The National) curated AIDs benefit compilation Dark Was the Night, which will be released in February through 4AD. The collaboration sees Blonde Redhead's Kazu adding vocals to the instrumental track Misericordia from Yes, U. Conrad has also provided a song for Alan Vega's (Suicide) 70th Birthday EP series which also sees contributions from Grinderman, Primal Scream, Sunn O))) and Peaches.

Wolf & Cub return with Seven Sevens - the new single from their forthcoming album, which will be released in February 2009.
Recorded with Bumblebeez genius Chris Colonna in his hometown of Braidwood, the song is awash with the psyched out vocals and intergalactic guitar of front man Joel Byrne, combined with the driving bass playing of Thomas Mayhew and the highly combustible percussion courtesy of Joel Carey and newcomer Marvin Hammond.
Taking the raw elements of the early demos and coupling them with the studio wizardry of Colonna, Wolf & Cub have created a memorable cocktail, one part lysergic… one part darkly danceable.
Between now and the release of the new album Wolf & Cub will be performing at the Falls and Southbound Festivals and will support New Yorkers TV On The Radio on their Australian side shows in January.
Fucked Up are the latest band to record a Daytrotter session, playing three tracks from their new album The Chemistry of Common Life, as well as a track from their 2007 release Hidden World. The first song in the session is Magic World
Early December will see Toronto's Holy Fuck perform in Australia for the very first time.
Known for their mesmerising live shows; expect tight space disco rhythms, robotic synth rock and spellbinding jams which build to all-out rave pandemonium.
On their chaotic, yet precise, recordings Holy Fuck don’t hide behind laptop computers and walls of synthesisers – think of them as a celebration of lo-fi noise and weirdo casio-driven rock. One might say that if modern electronic music is a highly sophisticated robot operated by hi-tech computers, Holy Fuck are the evil counterpart. They are less of a modern indie rock band than they are an exploded diagram of an indie rock band, splitting open to reveal their organic guts, tangled wires and broken bits of drumsticks. Their reputation as a must-see live band is TOTALLY deserved.
Last month saw Holy Fuck tour the UK with Foals, covering their track Balloons while Foals reciporcated by recording a cover of Super Inuit from Holy Fuck's debut album LP. In case you missed our post, here are the covers again:
Wed 10 Dec – Melbourne, The Corner w/ Love Of Diagrams + Mountains In The Sky Thu 11 Dec – Sydney, Annandale Hotel w/ Mountains In The Sky + Wow Fri 12 Dec – Meredith, Meredith Music Festival Sat 13 Dec - Brisbane, The Zoo w/ Taste Of Teeth + Toy Balloon
Jam Hot is a slinky, soul-stirring number that channels 1940s swing to deliver a unique hip hop sound of the near future. The charismatic delivery of the cheeky lyrics lures the listener in, building imagery of a smoke-filled nightspot of a bygone era.
Its jungle-infused rhythm is lead by a hot-steppin’ bass line that drives this undeniable dance floor filler from beginning to end. Just try not to shimmy along to this beat.
Jam Hot is taken from Koolism’s long-awaited fifth album, The ‘Umu (pron. Oo-moo). After a three year hiatus, DJ/ producer, Danielsan, and MC, Hau, are ready to unleash an album filled with the usual Koolism ingredients – soul, love and hip hop.
“‘Umu” is a Tongan word for an underground oven - a cooking technique that is practiced throughout the South Pacific. It’s a long and tiring process in which to prepare and to cook food slowly and thoroughly, but it’s results are rewarding and enjoyed by all who feast on it.
That’s what I feel this album is like. A lot of time, money, heart and soul went into making this album, in which many cases, made it quite grueling and trying. But after all that, the fruits of our labour are now ready to enjoy. And you know how Tongans eat, so you better get a big plate and fill it up!”
The ‘Umu will be ready early 2009, so get your forks and knives ready.
The inimitable Annie Clarke will be returning to our shores for a run of three shows at Sydney Festival in January 2009.
A touring member of Sufjan Steven's band, Annie performed a one off show with My Brightest Diamond for a lucky Melbourne audience but the rest of the country missed out. Not this time, fingers crossed. She will be performing three shows in at The Famous Spiegeltent for Sydney Festival. No news yet on other side shows just yet but fingers and toes are crossed.

Jane Badler brings her devilish show to Sydney and Melbourne
Sat 15 Nov – Sydney, Vanguard Thu 11 Dec – Melbourne, Spiegeltent
This weekend, Sat November 15th ‘The Devil has my Double’ an album by Hollywood glamour icon Jane Badler has its Sydney launch at the Vanguard. The album is a compulsive mix of fame, sex and solitude set to a soundtrack of sweeping cold soul and synthetics. ‘The Devil has my Double’ a tale of too much for too long. How a charmed life has its price and eventually it must be paid.
The album lyrically and musically reflects Jane’s remarkable life and career from her initial public notoriety as Miss New Hampshire, competing in the Miss America pageant, to her long and varied career in Hollywood B films and television.
Jane appeared weekly on American television from 1976 to 1989 including roles in the classic daytime soap One life to live, Fantasy Island, the kidnapping seductress of Alex Baldwin’s baby in The Doctors and the on-air adversary of Kim Novak in Falcon’s Crest. Jane is best remembered for her portrayal of sexually charged villain Diana in the cult classic V, (Jane’s was voted one of Science Fictions 25 greatest legends in American TV Guide, August 2004).
Jane Badler began her professional singing career singing at the Playboy Club in Manhattan in the mid seventies, and finally after years of performing releases an album of originals informed by the twists and turns of her curious story.
Praise for the album

Rockwired July 08 “21st Century torch songs, a chanteuse surveying her tattered past” Sydney Morning Herald July 4th 08 “The Devil Has My Double is a sultry love story of a woman scorned, both understated and intense at the same time.” SX News July 08

Next month will see Jane Badler and Sir perform at the Spiegeltent in Melbourne. Stay tuned for more details.
Matador outfit Dead Meadow are bringing their love of 70s rock, 60s psych and eastern drones to Australia for the first time when they play the Nick Cave All Tomorrow’s Parties. Also just announced for ATP are the Dirty Three, who will return to Australia for one exclusive show at Mt Buller, where they will perform their classic album Ocean Songs in its entirety.
The New Pornographers just blasted through Australia and New Zealand on the final leg of their Challengers tour. Band leader Carl Newman now rolls straight in to working on his second solo album Get Guilty. Helping Carl on the forthcoming album are drummer Jon Wurster (Mountain Goats), Nicole Atkins, and Mates Of State. “There Are Maybe Ten Or Twelve”, the first taste of the album, can be heard on Matador Records' free, downloadable Intended Play sampler. Stereogum has already described the track as “some imagined indie-pop national anthem”.

Thom Yorke Waves Farewell To The Thief with a free download
Thom Yorke celebrates the end of the Bush era, and a few other things, by slipping out a remix of "Harrowdown Hill", a track off his debut solo album The Eraser.
Thom explains:
did i fall or was i pushed? in celebration of nov 5th jonnys burthday amid bonfire and fireworks in the UK and the dawn of a new era in politics in the USA i humbly donate a remix of harrowdown hill that was finished ages ago during the band webcasts, a small reminder of the dark days of Bush's.... x
Blue Mountains indie-folk 4 piece Cloud Control release their Death Cloud EP on iTunes today. [Buy]
Title track Death Cloud captures a snapshot of an era when pitch-perfect harmonies were sung over folk hooks and sunny melodies; when pop was pure and just made you smile:
