New Video and Stream: 4AD Sessions with Tune-Yards and Deerhunter

4AD have launched "Sessions", a new section on their website dedicated to capture live footage of performances by 4AD's best and brightest.
The first to get the ball rolling is Tune-Yards.

If you haven't come across the work of Merril Garbus' solo project Tune-Yards, this is the perfect introduction. Possessing an expansive sound that marries a coarse folk ingenuity with the bold pop sensibility of an R&B siren, Tune-Yards' eclectic sound is one that will resonate with fans of Micachu, Scout Niblett and Bjork.

Click here to watch the whole thing.

The 4AD sessions originally stemmed from the Deerhunter session recorded at Platt Eyot studio in 2008.

New Atlas Sound album and mp3

Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox is back with a new release under his solo guise, Atlas Sound, for another round of ethereal pop genius with his second solo album, Logos.

Whilst its predecessor (Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel, 2007) was a record of fragile beauty and acute experimentalism in comparison to the often volatile bluster of Deerhunter, Logos has a far more rooted pop sensibility.

A draft version of the album leaked on the internet last year. Understandably, Cox was not happy Jan! In fact he almost abandoned the project but thank goodness he didn't.

Bradford says, "My last album was a bedroom laptop type thing. Very introverted. Logos is an album that was recorded all over the world. It's not about me. There are collaborations with other musicians. The lyrics are not autobiographical. The view is a lot more panoramic and less close-up. I became bored with introspection. This was also the case Deerhunter's Microcastle LP, which was written during the same period."

At its heart is ‘Walkabout’, a collaboration between Cox and Noah Lennox (Panda Bear) put together whilst he was on tour with Animal Collective in Europe. Combining their love for tape loops and doo-wop, the track lifts the hook from The Dovers’ classic 1966 garage track ‘What Am I Going To Do?’ to form a glorious summertime jam.

Walkabout [mp3]

Elsewhere Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier also lends her vocals to the kaleidoscopic motorik number, ‘Quick Canal’.

The tracklisting is as follows:
'The Light That Failed'
'An Orchid'
'Walkabout' ft. Noah Lennox (Panda Bear)
'Criminals'
'Attic Lights'
'Sheila'
'Quick Canal' ft. Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab)
'My Halo'
'Kid Climax'
'Washington School'
'Logos'

Deerhunter announce their first tour of Australia

Deerhunter have just announced their first tour of Australia!:

"A massive, psych‐heavy, art‐damaged four piece, and one of the most inspired new bands we’ve heard in quite a while... not to mention their absolutely fucking insane live shows." – Pitchfork

Deerhunter began in 2001 with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with the klang and propulsion of garage rock. Since then, the band has weathered chaotic line‐up changes, the death of a member and much discouragement, to emerge in the past two years as an unchallenged tenant of pop avantgarde, capturing listens the world wide.

The band creates songs in a psychophysical multitrack stream of‐consciousness rush but their most compelling asset is a penchant for unpredictability. No two performances are the same; rather the group's cerebral fingerprint shines through constantly morphing presentations.

Their live performances almost always leave audiences indoctrinated, having been referred to by Karen O of the yeah yeah yeah’s in NME as bordering on “a religious experience.”

Deerhunter have just completed a European tour where they played shows with Liars as well as festival slots at Pitchfork vs All Tomorrow’s Parties and Primavera.

New releases from Deerhunter, Lou Reed and Anni Rossi

Microcastle is a hazy and dream like gem from Bradford Cox and his band. The follow-up to Deerhunter’s critically lauded debut Cryptograms, Microcastle is in parts kraut, shoe-gazy, ambient and majestic. Featuring 12 tracks, the album also comes backed with 13 track bonus disc Weird Era Cont.

Afton
is the debut 4AD release from 22 year old multi-instrumentalist Anni Rossi. From Minnesota via Los Angeles she is classically trained from a young age with the viola forming the centrepiece to her music. Currently working with Steve Albini (Pixies, Joanna Newsom, PJ Harvey) on her debut album due out next year, she can count artists like Electrelane and The Ting Tings among her admirers and has toured Europe and the US with both of them.

Deerhunter's new, new, new cover

Yes, Deerhunter have changed the cover for their new album Microcastle again. Third time's a charm, right?

Microcastle is the follow-up to 2006’s critically lauded Cryptograms and was recorded over the course of a week in Brooklyn with Nicolas Verhes (Les Savy Fav, Silver Jews).

The band on the record are a four-piece consisting of Bradford Cox (you may recall his recent solo ventures as Atlas Sound), Lockett Pundt, Joshua Fauver and Moses Archuleta (they have since been joined by an additional guitarist, Whitney Petty).

Microcastle is due out physically on October 25th with both the CD and LP versions featuring bonus disc Weird Era Cont. (track list here). The first single from the album is Nothing Ever Happened b/w Little Kids (demo) and will be issued on limited edition 7”.
