The Big Pink album streaming on line - out this Friday!

Ahead of the record's release on September 11, The Big Pink are streaming their debut album, A Brief History of Love:

You can also download the new single Dominos here
Dominos [mp3]

WHO ARE THE BIG PINK?

In case you missed the buzz,

Searing and soulful, transcendental and life affirming, The Big Pink are Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell, two old friends in love with digital hardcore and the narcotic effects of blessed out electronic music. Woozy refrains become 'pink noise'. They dream of the future. More people should. There is an incredible human soul to all they do, something entrancing.

The Big Pink recorded their debut album at the legendary Electric Ladyland studios in New York. The album is self-produced, mixed by Rich Costey (Interpol, Glasvegas, The Mars Volta, Muse). Entitled A Brief History Of Love, Milo Cordell says of the album name “Every song is a love song to some degree, about every different aspect of love.

“The good, the bad, the boring, the exciting, the dreams, the nightmares, the whole thing and I guess that’s what encompasses the whole album."

New video from The Big Pink - Dominos

The Big Pink have released a second video from their debut album A History Of Love, due for release Sep 12.

The track is the anthemic Dominos, and it will have you turning up the volume dial so you can sing along at the top of your lungs!

The video for their first single, Velvet, was a little too saucy for some (bondage, neck straps and all), making some commercial networks stop short of broadcasting it to the free to air masses.

What will they figure of these icy melting maidens being exploded across the screen? The clip features Robbie and Milo, but also their hot Japanese drummer Akiko Matsuura.

The Mountain Goats Go Biblical

John Darnielle and co have announced the release of a new album due out in October this year titled The Life Of The World To Come.

When questioned about the premise of the upcoming album, Darnielle says "It’s twelve new songs: twelve hard lessons the Bible taught me, kind of."

With a tracklisting that reads like a Sunday school's curriculum you'd be forgiven for thinking that The Mountain Goats may have gone all Christian Rock on us!
Though Darnielle insists it isn't an album detailing a "religious awakening" rather an immersion in Biblical poetry and imagery.

Intriguing!

Take a listen to the first track from the album Genesis 3:23.

Genesis 3:23 [mp3]

The Life of the World to Come:

New Atlas Sound album and mp3

Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox is back with a new release under his solo guise, Atlas Sound, for another round of ethereal pop genius with his second solo album, Logos.

Whilst its predecessor (Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel, 2007) was a record of fragile beauty and acute experimentalism in comparison to the often volatile bluster of Deerhunter, Logos has a far more rooted pop sensibility.

A draft version of the album leaked on the internet last year. Understandably, Cox was not happy Jan! In fact he almost abandoned the project but thank goodness he didn't.

Bradford says, "My last album was a bedroom laptop type thing. Very introverted. Logos is an album that was recorded all over the world. It's not about me. There are collaborations with other musicians. The lyrics are not autobiographical. The view is a lot more panoramic and less close-up. I became bored with introspection. This was also the case Deerhunter's Microcastle LP, which was written during the same period."

At its heart is ‘Walkabout’, a collaboration between Cox and Noah Lennox (Panda Bear) put together whilst he was on tour with Animal Collective in Europe. Combining their love for tape loops and doo-wop, the track lifts the hook from The Dovers’ classic 1966 garage track ‘What Am I Going To Do?’ to form a glorious summertime jam.

Walkabout [mp3]

Elsewhere Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier also lends her vocals to the kaleidoscopic motorik number, ‘Quick Canal’.

The tracklisting is as follows:
'The Light That Failed'
'An Orchid'
'Walkabout' ft. Noah Lennox (Panda Bear)
'Criminals'
'Attic Lights'
'Sheila'
'Quick Canal' ft. Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab)
'My Halo'
'Kid Climax'
'Washington School'
'Logos'

The Big Pink announce debut album

From 4ad:
As recording starts to come to a close out in New York, The Big Pink have revealed the title of their forthcoming debut record, due September.

Speaking to 6Music, Milo Cordell discussed how A Brief History Of Love came to be the title for the release.

"Every song is a love song to some degree, about every different aspect of love.

"The good, the bad, the boring, the exciting, the dreams, the nightmares, the whole thing and I guess that’s what encompasses the whole album, and we have a song called ‘A Brief History Of Love’ so it’s apt."

Currently still recording out in Manhattan with various production teams, Milo declared the heritage of the studio where they were recording had been crucial to the way they had gone about putting the album together.

"It’s been great doing it in New York, being in Electric Lady. We recorded it in the same room as Combat Rock by The Clash."

Partner Robbie Furze also revealed certain dimensions to their sound were developed as a result of them making the most of the studio.

"We’ve got Bowie’s piano, the one that he played on, we’ve actually got on our record.

"There’s a couple of slower ones that we don’t play live," Furze added. "We actually wrote a new song out in Electric Lady which came very quickly in that room.”

As part of our monthly mailout we have another competition for you to enter, this time with the chance to win one of the copies of the band's Japanese EP release, This Is Our Time. To be in with the running to win sign up to the 4AD mailing list.

More details on the record and the much-anticipated video for 'Stop The World' expected shortly.

Pixies Minotaur boxset announced

Goodness, didn't this Pitchfork tweet just send a flurry of questions our way yesterday.

Well thankfully 4ad have provided some answers:

Five classic 4AD releases from Pixies are going to be reissued as both Limited Edition and Deluxe Edition collector's sets entitled Minotaur. Spearheaded by Jeff Anderson, founder of A+R (Artist in Residence), who has put together expansive and eye-catching versions of releases by Nine Inch Nails, Beck and Sigur Ros - Minotaur will be available for pre-order at www.ainr.com beginning Monday, June 15, 2009. The Minotaur Deluxe Edition will retail for $175, while the Minotaur Limited Edition will be priced at $450.

The Deluxe Edition will include all five Pixies studio albums - Come On Pilgrim (1987), Surfer Rosa (1988), Doolittle (1989), Bossanova (1990), and Trompe le Monde (1991) - on 24k layered CD and Blu-ray (five discs total), with reinterpreted artwork by Vaughan Oliver, the graphic designer who created all of the artwork that accompanied the Pixies' studio albums. Also included in the Deluxe Edition will be a DVD of a Pixies 1991 performance at the Brixton Academy in London, the group's videos, possible live tracks, and a 54-page book, all housed in a custom slipcase. The Minotaur Limited Edition version will include everything in the Deluxe Edition, as well as all five albums on 180 gram vinyl, a Giclee print of Oliver's artwork, and a 72-page hardcover book, all housed in an oversized custom clamshell cover.

Anderson explained the idea behind the set. "As a Pixies fan, I asked myself, 'How can we re-release this without making this just another box set?' I think we've all been down that road where you've purchased a box set and have been disappointed by only getting a few bonus tracks and a few extra photos. With the Pixies, because they remain such a contemporary band and their sound is still so relevant today, we wanted to re-introduce them to their fans, giving them something that they would truly appreciate and cherish. And also, how can we introduce the band to new fans? What soon followed was the idea of Vaughan Oliver."

Oliver - who was the resident album designer for 4AD - explains how he assembled the now instantly-recognizable album covers for the band. "My starting point would always be the music, reading the lyrics, talking with the band - what their preferences were, in film and painting. With the Pixies, it was work that was always close to my heart and my own personal aesthetic - the images that Charles [aka Black Francis] painted with his lyrics really struck a chord. His work is full of fantastic imagery that always appealed to me, and those were ideas I was trying to reflect with the packaging."

After discussing the project with Anderson, Oliver came up with an intriguing idea. "I said, 'That was then, this is now. Why don't we do a whole new body of work? It's all born of the same lyrics and albums - it would be evolving the ideas we had in the original packages.' I worked with the same photographer who I worked with back then, Simon Larbalestier. If there were a 'fifth Pixie,' it would have been Simon - his work so suited what they were doing. Simon's gone out and shot a whole new body of work. He was a bit panicked at first, he said, 'The old sleeves - with the topless Spanish dancer, the red planet - have become iconic.' I said to Simon, 'Don't be scared. You're 20 years on, you're a better photographer. Let's take all those same things and do a new body of work.' He shot some amazing images that I think surpass what we did first time around."

Now an art teacher at the University of the Creative Arts in Epsom [in Surrey, U.K.], Oliver called upon his students for some input for the Pixies set. "I selected a team of students under my direction to work with the titles in the track listing, in a three dimensional way. Cutting the track listing out of cards, shining light through it, making the track titles from nails - all very organic. We're using the type as 'image.' There's a link when you look at them visually with the images that I'm putting next to them in the book."

Upon seeing the gorgeous packaging and effort that has gone into both the Deluxe and Limited Editions of Minotaur, Pixies fans worldwide will get a chance to experience the Pixies in a whole new manner, thanks to Anderson, Oliver, and Larbalestier. "We design some interesting and innovative packages," adds Anderson. "We're not inexpensive, but I think there are still people out there who don't mind paying for great quality."

New St Vincent mp3 Actor Out Of Work

St Vincent's Actor Out Of Work is the next single taken from the upcoming album Actor.

Actor Out Of Work is where Clark gets into 'rock mode' if you like, a succinct concoction of fuzzed out guitars, horns and thumping drums clocking in at just over two minutes.

Though don’t be mistaken, this aint your ordinary middle-of-the-road rock track.

Miss Clarke’s melodies and inventive arrangements ensure that this is yet another one of her kooky creations, impossible to pigeon hole yet easy to love.

New Broken Records mp3 - Until The Earth Begins To Part

Armed with an onslaught of instruments including guitars, bass, violin, cello, accordion, mandolin, piano, trumpet, glockenspiel and drums (phew!), Broken Records are set to release their album Until The Earth Begins To Part.

The first taste is the album’s title track, a lush and layered arrangement that has a beautiful balance of horns, strings and lively, dynamic vocals.

In a statement the band said "we’re trying to do something different. People forget that music doesn’t have to be just bass, guitar and drums. It can be just as loud and exciting with glockenspiel and trumpet". After one listen we can safely say they’ve pretty much nailed it.

Stereolab on hiatus

Aren't you glad you caught Stereolab on their recent Australian tour? Coz now they've gone on hiatus so it was their last run here for what looks like could be quite a while.

From the band's website via Pitchfork:

Dear All,

As we recently made #51 with Emperor Tomato Ketchup in the Amazon 100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums of all Time we feel that our work is done for the moment.
We have had to cancel the last two shows that we were scheduled to play, apologies to all that had bought tickets, and there are no plans to record new tracks.
Duophonic are working on the release of Chemical Chords 2, we also have plans for a new Switched On and remastering of the back catalogue.
We are are all going to have a bit of a rest now after nearly 19 years and work on a few other projects.
The website will still be updated and disks released but there won't be any new Stereolab product for a while.

Deerhunter announce their first tour of Australia

Deerhunter have just announced their first tour of Australia!:

"A massive, psych‐heavy, art‐damaged four piece, and one of the most inspired new bands we’ve heard in quite a while... not to mention their absolutely fucking insane live shows." – Pitchfork

Deerhunter began in 2001 with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with the klang and propulsion of garage rock. Since then, the band has weathered chaotic line‐up changes, the death of a member and much discouragement, to emerge in the past two years as an unchallenged tenant of pop avantgarde, capturing listens the world wide.

The band creates songs in a psychophysical multitrack stream of‐consciousness rush but their most compelling asset is a penchant for unpredictability. No two performances are the same; rather the group's cerebral fingerprint shines through constantly morphing presentations.

Their live performances almost always leave audiences indoctrinated, having been referred to by Karen O of the yeah yeah yeah’s in NME as bordering on “a religious experience.”

Deerhunter have just completed a European tour where they played shows with Liars as well as festival slots at Pitchfork vs All Tomorrow’s Parties and Primavera.

Department Of Eagles video - No One Does It Like You

Department Of Eagles have just released a video for their song 'No One Does It Like You'.

The clip was directed by Patrick Daughters (who has previous done videos for Feist, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beck, Interpol, The Shins and Depeche Mode) and New York based artist Marcel Dzarma.

Dzarma also designed the sets and costumes in this beautiful though slightly disquieting, surrealist dream of a clip.

The clip had its debut screening at the Museum of Modern Art in New York this week.

In Ear Park is out now through 4ad.

The Big Pink - Velvet

Who ever said jealousy was a bad thing?

The Big Pink started when label manager at Merock Records (Telepathe, Salem) Caleb Merock got a bit jealous of his bands going off and doing the rock star thing and decided to have a crack at it himself. Aren’t we lucky he did? The Big Pink essentially sound like electro kids brought up on a healthy diet of My Bloody Valentine and Jesus And Mary Chain, just take a listen to their single ‘Velvet”.

It’s a nice clash of swampy, dark atmospheric electro with a wall of guitar and soulful vocals thrown over the top.

The Breeders self release new EP

The Breeders are following up last year's Mountain Battles album with a self-released EP.

Entitled Fate To Fatal, it will be release April 21. It features 4 tracks including "The Last Time" (feat. guest vocals by Mark Lanegan), "Chances Are" (a Bob Marley cover and the title track "Fate To Fatal" which the band have shot a roller derby clip for.

The clip's not out yet but this making of is:

So why the self release? Kim Deal told Pitchfork:
It seems that now, more than at any other time in the past, we could put the music out ourselves - hand-screen some cool artwork ourselves, sell the EPs at our shows and on our website, as well as get them to traditional record stores and other online outlets. So we're just going to press up a thousand twelve-inch vinyls." (The Breeders remain signed to 4AD)

Those Deal sister sure like to keep themselves busy. The Breeders will also be playing and curating All Tomorrow's Parties in the UK in May.

St Vincent delivers unto us The Strangers

St Vincent, aka Annie Clarke, has unveiled the first track The Strangers from her new album Actor, due out May 2.

Two years ago, Annie Clark’s recorded debut as St. Vincent, Marry Me, gave immediate notice that a dizzying new talent had emerged from the flatlands of Texas. Actor, St. Vincent’s beguiling, sophisticated new record, takes that debut’s ambition as its starting point and never looks back. The arrangements are more masterful, the songwriting grander, the performances ever more confident and inspired.

New video from Future Of The Left

Late last year, Welsh trio Future Of The Left released an mp3 of The Hope That House Built, the first single from their as yet untitled sophomore album due out later this year. A few months on and now comes the video:

The single is due out March 21 on 7".

And while you wait in anticipation for the new album, you can satiate yourself with their recently released live album Last Night I Saved Her From Vampires, featuring 19 tracks recorded at 2 shows back in August.

And for those music pirates out there, Andy Falkous has this to say:
"Oh, and by the way, the next person, male or female, who accosts me at a show, incredulous at our lack of success then tells me that they illegally downloaded all of our music gets punched squarely in the tits. No exceptions. Be a feckless, short-sighted fucking thief all you like but self-righteous hypocrites with no sense of the absurd are valid, vapid targets."
Bless them. More at their blog.

Free Hugs, Now + Again

Since forming back in 2006, Kent’s It Hugs Back have been quietly winning over the discerning populace with their dreamy indie-pop gems. Three years on, the four-piece are finally ready to unleash their debut album Inside Your Guitar, due out April 4th.

Having joined 4AD early last year they have been carefully honing their live shows through extensive touring, released the charmingly artworked single Work Day (currently soundtracking the Sundance Film Festival television coverage) and made idiosyncratic music videos with former Aardman animators.

As with previous single Work Day, Now + Again is lifted from Inside Your Guitar and is yet another great catchy guitar-driven track clocking in at just over two minutes, showcasing Matt Simms’ softly-spoken vocals masked by layers of feedback and fuzz. The single is backed by new song Both Arms and will be available on limited edition 7” vinyl.

St. Vincent's new album details revealed

Actor is the much anticipated follow up to St. Vincent's (Annie Clark) first album Marry Me, one of the most acclaimed debuts of 2007. Actor was co-produced by Clark and John Congleton (Modest Mouse, Polyphonic Spree) and features eleven new songs, all written and arranged by Clark.

Actor, due out May 3, takes the ambitious compositional and sonic underpinnings of Clark's debut as a starting point and never looks back. The arrangements are more masterful, the songwriting grander, the performances ever more confident and inspired. Those who saw St. Vincent at her recent sold out performances at the Sydney Festival will have been lucky enough to witness this first hand.

Speaking for the first time about Actor, Annie Clark commented, "I wanted to make these songs technicolour animatronic rides."

Clark, "a playful chanteuse [and] fearsome shredder" according to the New York Times, sings and plays guitar, bass and keyboard on Actor, with woodwind contributions from Hideaki Aomori (Sufjan Stevens) and Alex Sopp (Bjork, Phillip Glass), plus additional rhythm section work by McKenzie Smith and Paul Alexander of Midlake. Other musicians on the album include Mike Atkinson (French horn, score consultant), Daniel Hart (violin, sarongi), William Flynn (bass), and percussionists Jeff Ryan, Matthias Bossi and Aynsley Powell.

The first St. Vincent album Marry Me earned widespread praise and led to Clark being named Female Artist of the Year at the 2008 PLUG Independent Music Awards and she has toured extensively with artists such as The National, Death Cab For Cutie and Arcade Fire. Before recording as St. Vincent, Annie Clark was a member of The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens' touring band, and performed with Glenn Branca's guitar orchestra.

Camera Obscura - new single and album details announced

As announced last week, Camera Obscura will be releasing their fourth album through legendary label 4AD in late April.

Entitled My Maudlin Career, the first single from the album is the title track and is now available for download.

Championed early on by John Peel, Glasgow’s Camera Obscura are fondly regarded by many as one of the UK’s finest acts; having built up over the years a dedicated following with must-have records and tours throughout Europe, USA, Mexico, Australia and South East Asia. Their last album, Let’s Get Out Of This Country (2006), was to prove pivotal for the band, taking them out of the shadows and to long-deserved new heights. “You might not find heartache as enchanting as this anywhere else,” stated All Music Guide in a familiar glowing review.

Having added successful touches to the previous album, Camera Obscura returned to Sweden to work again with Swedish producer Jari Haapalainen (Ed Harcourt, Peter, Bjorn & John, The Concretes). His wonderful understanding with the band continues to flourish, again fully realising not just the potential of Tracyanne Campbell’s songs and remarkable voice, but also the ensemble musicianship of the group as a whole.

Speaking for the first time about My Maudlin Career, lead singer Tracyanne Campbell commented, "Some people who have heard it say it's intense and quite dark. I suppose it is in a way. We were even more open and brave when making it than we were with the last record. I've never been so brutal when its come to writing lyrics. I wouldn't even call them lyrics. Just documentation of what was going on with me for a while. I truly believe it's the best we've done so far."

My Maudlin Career tracklist:

1. French Navy
2. The Sweetest Thing
3. You Told A Lie
4. Away With Murder
5. Swans
6. James
7. Careless Love
8. My Maudlin Career
9. Forest And Sands

The 11-track album is the result of a year's labour of love for the band and was recorded in their home studio, The Record Room in Maidstone, Kent. It is an album that wears its heart on its sleeve as Matthew Simms' softly spoken vocals turn the captivating guitar licks, rhythms and feedback fuzz into something wistful, imaginative and charming.

Their latest video is for the track Now & Again featuring stop-motion Tetris blocks, as directed by Martin Rhys Davies.

3 new signings for 4AD

The spate of new signings continues with 4AD announcing that Camera Obscura, The Big Pink and Broken Records will be joining their roster, which already hosts many luminaries including Deerhunter, The National and Beirut.

Forming over a decade, Scottish indie-pop band Camera Obscura will be releasing their follow up to 2006's Let's Get Out of This Country early this year.
On being signed to 4AD, the band have posted on their myspace that they "are understandably excited about this but will endeavor not to reflect this in our facial expressions so as not to cause unnecessary alarm."

Taking their name from The Band's 1968 album, The Big Pink are a London duo who create electronic soundscapes described as "The Teardrop Explodes being played by MBV whilst Suicide man the mixing desk". They are long time friends Milo Cordell (founder of Merok who has released Klaxons and Crystal Castles to name a few) and Robbie Furze (former guitarist with electro-punk singer Alec Empire).

There must be something in the water in Scotland that makes people want to form large bands, as Broken Records one up Camera Obscura with 7 members. Using a range of instruments including guitars, bass, violin, cello, accordion, mandolin, piano, trumpet, glockenspiel and drums, they create a sound combining traditional European folk with modern Scottish alternative music. Last year the band released a limited edition single If The News Makes You Sad Don't Watch It on Young Turks (El Guincho, Holy Fuck, Jack Peñate).

Future Of The Left cancel tour

Welsh trio Future Of The Left have reluctantly pulled out of all their upcoming tour dates, including shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, as well as dates in the UK and China.

The band released a statement attributing the decision to building pressure to release their second album in the first half of 2009.
“We have been unable to write the second record and we are increasingly aware of the need to do so. We want to get it out before summer so we can spend next year playing it to people.

"It is against everything the band stands for to pull shows, or anything that we have already committed to doing, and we apologise to everyone who had bought a ticket or was going to come along.

"We will be back as soon as we can next year and we promise to make it worth the wait."

Future Of The Left were scheduled to play in Australia in early January.

Prior to the release of their official second album, the band will be releasing new live album Last Night I Saved Her From Vampires in the coming months.

Beirut's new EP and Natalie Portman charity collaboration

Beirut's Zach Condon is set to release a double disc package. Disc one is March of the Zapotec with 6 new tracks recently recorded in Mexico. Disc two is entitled Holland and features the track My Night With The Prostitute From Marseille.

Natalie Portman recently declared Beirut to be her "new favourite band", so when she was asked to curate the charity mix CD Big Change: Songs for FINCA, she asked Beirut first. You can listen to the track over at EW.

New releases from Department of Eagles, Brightblack Morning Light and Tom Cooney

This weekend saw the release of yet another trio of albums from an eclectic mix of artists: there’s a Brisbane troubadour, a couple of hippies and a duo from Brooklyn.

Presque Vu (meaning “almost seen”) is the debut album from Tom Cooney, sonically pivoting on Tom’s guitar, lyrics and melodies. Many friends added the spokes to roll Presque Vu along including Whitley, and members from Subaudible Hum, Boat People and McKisko. Having previously performed with Fionn Regan and M. Ward, as well as playing at Splendour in the Grass and Homebake, Tom will be launching the new album along the East Coast over the next two weeks, starting in Sydney this Wednesday.

Wednesday 15th - Will & Toby’s, Sydney
Thursday 16th - The Troubadour, Brisbane
Wednesday 22nd - East Brunswick Club, Melbourne

Beneath the Wheel [mp3]

Their hair is long. Their music warm and hazy. They are Brightblack Morning Light. Haunting, beautiful and weird in equal doses, their new album Motion To Rejoin is the perfect Saturday night and Sunday morning album. Recorded entirely under solar power in a remote adobe cabin in the New Mexican mesa, the album recalls musicians as diverse as Bob Dylan, My Bloody Valentine, Neil Young and Otis Reading.

Oppressions Each [mp3]

Department of Eagles
are Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear alongside his friend Fred Nicolaus, plus additional help from two other members of Grizzly Bear, Christopher Bear and Chris Taylor. In Ear Park is a delight; both colourful and expansive, built upon an intimate and personal framework of songs and is a definite highlight of 2008. Full of joyful moments, lush production and concise songwriting, In Ear Park is an album that stays with the listener and only encourages repeat visits.

Jay Reatard and Stereolab hit the streets

Jay Reatard and Stereolab have both been announced to play next year's Laneway Festivals.

It's been six long years since Stereolab last graced Australia's shores and four since their last album release, Margerine Eclipse. Stereolab recently released their 11th studio album in an illustrious career, Chemical Chords. According to Tim Gane the album is a collection of “purposefully short, dense, fast pop songs”. It is classic Stereolab; like all their best work it is the perfect melding of an implausibly cool past and a shamelessly exotic future.

Last week saw the release of Jay Reatard's new album Matador Singles '08. The release compiles the 12 punk pop gems that Jay has released over the past few months on limited 7" through Matador. With Jay already working on his debut album proper for Matador, we can all look forward to hopefully hearing this new material live.

In Ear Park, out this Saturday, has just been given an 8.3 rating on Pitchfork and is described as "a sprawling pop record (complete with guitars, piano, horns, banjo, and more) that evokes Sgt. Pepper's, Sung Tongs, Van Dyke Parks, and Gene Clark. Ambitious and complex, it's stuffed with cocooning harmonies and shimmering, sunlight-smacking-the-Pacific melodies."

New track from Jóhann Jóhannsson

An American magnate builds a doomed utopia in the depths of the Brazilian rainforest. A Victorian poetess laments the death of Pan. A pagan rocket scientist blows himself up in his Californian garage. A crippled German physicist draws up the equations which can make faster than light travel possible, unseen by the rest of the world.

Jóhann Jóhannsson is an Icelandic composer and musician. His spellbinding new album, Fordlândia, draws these tantalising threads together, weaving a musical tapestry of hypnotic richness and surprising emotional depth.

The first glimpse of the album is the cinematic track The Rocket Builder:

The Rocket Builder [mp3]

His music is stately, slow-building and hauntingly melodic music, frequently combining electronic processing with classical orchestrations, that has been quietly bewitching listeners for the last few years.

His first solo album Englabörn was originally released in 2002 and re-released on 4AD last year, getting an 8.0 review on Pitchfork. The album was derived from music that Jóhann wrote for an Icelandic play using string quartet, piano, organ, glockenspiel and percussion. These elements were processed and manipulated, adding delicate electronic accents to the otherwise entirely acoustic recordings.

Jóhann's first release for 4AD, IBM 1401 - A User's Manual (2006), involved a sixty-piece string orchestra recorded at Prague's legendary Barrandov sound stage and incorporated electronics and vintage reel-to-reel recordings of a 1960's IBM 1401 mainframe computer and its accompanying instruction manual.

Fordlândia is Jóhann Jóhannsson's most complete and beautiful piece of music to date; a fascinating, immersive and deeply rewarding web of ideas and melodies, which is sure to win him a legion of new listeners. The album is due out November 1.
