Snowman honoured by Pitchfork

Snowman have capped off a busy year by getting an honourable mention for their sophomore album The Horse, The Rat and The Swan in Pitchfork's Albums of the Year list. Here's a bit of what they said about the album:
"The record is a proud enigma, technologically advanced and primal, referential but utterly unique, a terrifying vision of our Stone Age future."
Snowman released the album in May and following a national tour relocated to London. If you've been wondering what they've been up to, here's a message from Joe:
To those of you who give a damn,

We are sorry for the long silence, our communication methods were disabled. We have been busy building new lives in London. Slowly the empire is growing. We have found a home of some description, in Walthamstow, E17 (where the group East 17 once hailed from, though I doubt we will be channeling any of their magic). Our home is above an Italian cafe on a high street. On our doorstep there are markets. Most mornings I am woken by the sound of a cockney shouting "two for a pound" or "money back guarantee". I fall asleep at night to the sound of a domestic disturbance or a stabbing. There are seven of us living in the flat. We have one toilet. I am sleeping under a stairwell...in a passage way. Today I am locked inside the house as I have not been allocated a key yet. In time these minor issues will be resolved.

We all appear to have jobs now. None of which are worth mentioning other than Ross'. He is a garbage man.

We have played a few shows here in the UK. We played Leeds, Bristol and London with fellow Australian noisemakers PIVOT. They are fine gentlemen and a wonderful band. Dear chum and label sibling Ned Collette played a show with us the other night too.

We are working on some new things. Bits and pieces. Something will rear it's ugly head at some stage.

We hope you are safe and warm.

Love always,

The SNOWMAN Empire
Snowman will be playing at Madame JoJo's (White Heat) in Soho on January 6th with HTRK.

Peter Gabriel and and Hot Chip cover Vampire Weekend

"And it feels so unnatural. Peter Gabriel, too."

With a chorus line like that, how could Peter Gabriel not do a cover of Vampire Weekend track Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa? And with electric keyboard help courtesy of Hot Chip, this is the result:

"It feels so unnatural. Peter Gabriel, too. And it feels so unnatural to sing your own name."

Snowman's First German Interview

German music blog Auf Touren has featured an interview with Snowman frontman Joe McKee. Joe talks about touring, musical influences and the band's songwriting process, particularly on their latest release The Horse, The Rat And The Swan...

AufTouren: Your brilliant last record, “The Horse, The Rat And The Swan”, takes a lot of time. Once you think you discovered it, you really really love it. I would say, it has got no real singles or instant hits and only works as a whole. How does it feel to release something that takes that much time in terms where people like to listen to silly ringtones?

Joe: Well, it took a long time to write. We spent hundreds of hours dedicated to the writing process and focused on creating a piece of art. It is, at times, a challenging piece of art, but all of my favourite art is this way. I think for art and music to truly move someone, it needs to be challenging and engaging at the same time.
For the full interview check out the Auf Touren blog.

Earlier this year Snowman relocated to London playing throughout England including several shows with fellow Aussie band Pivot and Ned Collette. The band are look on embarking tours throughout the rest of Europe and the US in 2009.

Little Joy - No One's Better Sake mp3 and video

It may not being feeling very Summery where you are now, but Little Joy are here to fix all that with their new single No One's Better Sake [mp3]

The video for the new single sees the band timewarp back to the 60s and includes a cameo by a maraca shaking Devendra Banhart:

Little Joy are Fabrizio Moretti from The Strokes, Binki Shapiro and Brazilian musician Rodrigo Amarante. Named after a nearby cocktail lounge, Little Joy's self-titled debut is a little bit Strokes and a little bit Tropicaia... the perfect soundtrack to a lazy Summer.

Tanlines - New Flowers

Tanlines are duo Eric Emm (from production duo Brothers) and Jesse Cohen (Professor Murder). The Brooklyn based duo came to some prominence and notoriety earlier this year with a playful, synth-led remix of Telepathe’s ‘Chromes On It’ [mp3]

Their unique approach to having their music heard includes using YouTube (which they describe as the best record label ever), to post tracks accompanied by self-made videos on their own channel as soon as the songs are done, creating a bizarre, almost psychedelic visual experience of Tanlines music.

They will release their debut 12", New Flowers, in January through Young Turks (Holy Fuck, El Guincho). The Balearic house-meets-Larry Levan’s NYC disco groove track was created when artist Marisa Olson asked them to contribute to the launch of her art book, Poems I Wrote While Listening to the Doors, 1992-1994 (Before I Found The Internet). They took one word from the suggested poem - “flowers”, and created this euphoric (mostly) instrumental track. The video features visual by Marisa.

Titus Andronicus Air Their Grievances

The Airing of Grievances is the debut album from New Jersey's Titus Andronicus, who named themselves after the Shakespearean tragedy.

The album was originally released in May of this year, getting a stellar 8.5 review on Pitchfork. XL will be realising a newly mastered version of the album in early 2009.

What does Titus Andronicus want people to walk away with after experiencing The Airing of Grievances? “Just that we’re humans, like them,” Stickles says. “That we’re every bit as imperfect and flawed and weak as they are. People always used to talk about Led Zeppelin, and how they were, like, gods onstage. I want people to look at us and see humans onstage, reveling in their humanity. We’re just regular guys from New Jersey, with the same wants and needs and desires and anxieties and disappointments that everybody else has.”

New M.I.A. Shells video

OK, so maybe not so much a music video as it is a plug for her latest clothing line.

The video was shot by M.I.A. earlier this year in the Caribbean and features "the real pirate of the Caribbean" Leslie Okley. The woman herself doesn't make an appearance, but there are a couple of dogs getting freaky (and apparently stuck) with each other on the beach.

You can read an interview where M.I.A. talks fashion with Fader here.

Dead Meadow sideshows announced

Psych rockers Dead Meadow have announced three sideshows alongside their performances at the inaugural Australian ATP Festival. Joining them for these indie extravaganzas will be UK electro duo Fuck Buttons and Japan's Afrirampo.

Combining a love of 70s rock and boogie with a strong 60s psychedelic and eastern influence has earned US band Dead Meadow a cult following the world over, more so with their latest album Old Growth and which is arguably their best and most accessible to date. On the album, chocolate thick overdubs of tamburas, Mellotrons and Hammonds flesh out barnyard stomp skeletons. Dead Meadow are renowned for their fierce live shows and will force you to go forward with them, to climb that mountain, leave your earthly problems behind and most importantly grow up.

Fri 9-Sat 10 Jan – Mt Buller, ATP Festival
Wed 14 Jan – Melbourne, Corner Hotel
Thu 15 Jan – Sydney, Oxford Arts Factory
Fri 16 Jan – Brisbane, Powerhouse Theatre
